Giant Sequoia Preservation Project

From August 17 to September 5, 2025, our Japanese ATI‑certified tree climbers and Jugoshi‑level arborists completed high‑canopy inspections in “Monarch” giant sequoias―living giants more than 2,000 years old. Using advanced technical climbing methods, the teams reached upper‑trunk and crown zones rarely accessible to science, enabling direct observation of bark beetle activity.
To prepare for early‑season monitoring, the teams conducted a practice installation of Japanese‑style trunk window beetle traps, a proven scientific tool widely used in Japan. This successful rehearsal marks a breakthrough in adapting precision beetle‑monitoring technology to the unique environment of giant sequoia forests.
We extend our deep appreciation to Trish Logan, SCPO, for her essential support, and to the professional tree climbers whose expertise made this work possible. Congratulations to our team for pioneering the first trunk window beetle trap installations ever tested in giant sequoias―advancing research and protection of these irreplaceable trees.

2025年8月17日から9月5日にかけて、ATI認定ツリークライマーと樹護士からなる私たちのチームは、樹齢2,000年以上の巨木「モナーク」ジャイアントセコイアにおいて、樹冠部のバークビートルの調査を実施しました。高度なテクニカルツリークライミング技術を用いることで、通常は科学的調査が困難な上部幹や樹冠域に到達することにより、樹皮下のキクイムシ活動を直接観察することができました。
　第１の目的、バークビートル存在の確認。目視でもわかるビートル被害である小さな穴を樹冠各所に確認することができた。
第２の目的、日本で広く使用されている科学的調査用の幹部ウィンドウトラップ（トランクウィンドウトラップ）設置を行いました。このリハーサルは、精密なキクイムシモニタリング技術をジャイアントセコイア特有の環境に適応させる上で大きな前進となりました。
本プロジェクトへの多大な支援をいただいた Trish Logan（SCPO）氏 に深く感謝申し上げます。また、卓越した技術で本研究を支え参加してくれた認定ツリークライマーの皆様にも心より感謝いたします。
そして、ジャイアントセコイアにおける史上初の幹部ウィンドウトラップ試験設置を成功させたチーム全員に祝意を表します。この成果は、かけがえのない巨木の保全と科学研究の大きな前進となりました。
